MESS: a disordered, untidy, offensive, or unpleasant state or condition (Merriam-Webster)
Today I ran across a picture of our house last October during the construction. It had rained for days. Mud was everywhere and it was a genuine MESS! It seemed like it was never going to be finished, and we were exhausted dealing with all the MESS of details that DID NOT seem to be working out in our favor!
Fast forward 7 months…this mess is no longer PRESENT. It has PASSED–sorted, ordered and in the past. What a difference!
I stand thankful and amazed at God’s constant faithfulness to help me though my PAST MESS, but I chuckle at the messes (yes, plural mess) I face presently. Here’s one for example…
I returned from our last trip to discover that my top closet bar had broken under the weight of my winter clothes. Thus, dumping said winter clothes into a horrible heap in the middle of my closet floor! I’ve been too busy with more important, pressing things to give any attention to this MESS right now, so it will have to wait!
I have come to grips with the fact that…THERE WILL ALWAYS BE A MESS. Until we graduate to heaven and are breathing here on Earth–life is MESSY! Kids are messy, people’s problems are messy, relationships are messy. Anything worth striving for usually has a “present state” of unpleasant and offensive disorder throughout the process, but LIFE DOESN’T HAVE TO BE PERFECT TO BE BEAUTIFUL. The fact is, it’s never going to be perfect if your moving forward, because there’s always a new infancy period or construction phase that’s not pretty, but is necessary for growth.
Whatever PRESENT MESS you’re facing today–there is GRACE for every mess! God’s wisdom is there to show you where to start. His strength is there to help you get busy with the work at hand. His WORD is there to fill you with faith to believe this PRESENT MESS will someday PASS.
Seven months from now you might not remember today’s mess, UNLESS you let it MESS up your HEART. Outside “messes” or circumstances change like the weather; inside “messes” accumulate to massive levels of hoarded emotions if not emptied and cleaned out regularly. (Picture images of the latest “Hoarders” reality television show–except in your heart and mind.) He is our help in our PRESENT TROUBLE, with every present mess–inside and out.
Lord, please bless this present mess. Let me not be swayed by doubt and stress. Clean my heart from today’s distress. By your grace I will walk into success — when this mess becomes my message.
Psalm 46:1 “God is our refuge and strength, A very present help in trouble.”
Romans 3:24 “God did it for us. Out of sheer generosity he put us in right standing with himself. A pure gift. He got us out of the mess we’re in and restored us to where he always wanted us to be. And he did it by means of Jesus Christ.” (MSG)
