11.27.2016 – Ps. Duane White – REthink Pt. 11

This Sunday, November 27th, 2016, Pastor Duane White continued our REthink series here at The Bridge Church in Denton, Texas.

“And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.”(Romans 12:2, NKJV)

Let’s begin with a few money misconceptions, and combat them with the truth about money in that area:

Money Misconceptions

  1. Jesus was poor.
  2. Money is evil.
  3. There’s “sacred money” and  “secular money.”
  4. Money changes you.

Money Truths

  1. Jesus was not poor. He just wasn’t worried about money. To Jesus, money was a tool, not a master. 1 Timothy 6:10 says, “The love of money is the root of all evil.” Notice it says “the love of money,” not money itself.
  2. Money is “amoral.” You can love money and have money, or you can love money and be dirt poor. Money takes on the morality of the owner. It’s not evil; it’s amoral.
  3. Money is not spiritual. People are spiritual. Money is merely a barometer of your spiritual atmosphere – it takes measurements of how spiritual we are. There is no secular money or sacred money. There is just money, and people use the money to do good or evil. It’s not the money, it’s how you get the money and what you do with it that matters.
  4. Money doesn’t change us; it merely makes us more of who we already are. Having more money doesn’t make you a bad person. Being a bad person makes you a bad person. Money just puts a spotlight or magnifying glass on your character. If you are like your Heavenly Father, then money just makes that more evident. Money is a magnifier.

It is impossible to talk about money or finance from a Kingdom Perspective without talking about generosity.

Here are three keys to REthinking generosity from a Kingdom perspectives:

  1.  Generosity is the character and nature of God.
  2. Generosity takes our eyes and trust off the REsource and on to the source.
  3. Generosity is love in action.

Money is merely a tool to display the character and nature of God by being generous like God. God is the source of all good things. Everything else good in life is a REsource. Generosity is a declaration that it is all God’s, and I am just being allowed to steward a little bit of it.

Generosity breaks the scarcity mentality and propels us into an abundance mentality. Generosity is betting your life on the goodness of God.

You can give without loving, but you can not love without giving. We are never more like God than when we give generously.

Here are two guiding principles that will help you:

  1. Don’t give merely to need; give to vision and purpose. That will meet needs.
  2. Be led by the Spirit, not by emotion or guilt. That’s manipulation. Even if the person isn’t trying to manipulate you, the devil is.

“The generous will prosper; those who REfresh others will themselves be REfreshed,” (Proverbs 11:25, NLT).

Let’s REthink generosity from Heaven’s vantage point.

11.20.2016 – Ps. Duane White – REthink Pt. 10

This Sunday, November 20th, 2016, Pastor Duane White continued our series REthink, here at The Bridge Church in Denton, Texas.

“And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.” (Romans 12:2, NKJV)

Have you ever noticed that it seems harder to stay positive than it does to be negative?

“In life, two negatives don’t make a positive. Double negatives turn positive only in math and formal logic.” – Robert McKee.

Are we hardwired to be positive or negative? Scientists say that we have a natural negativity bias.

The Negativity Bias: Things of a more negative nature (e.g. unpleasant thoughts, emotions, or social interactions; harmful/traumatic events) have a greater effect on one’s psychological state and processes than do neutral or positive things.

In our brains, there are two different systems for how we process negative and positive stimuli. The part that processes emotions uses approximately two thirds of its neurons to detect negative experiences and stores them into long-term memory quickly. On the other hand, positive experiences have to be held in our awareness for more than 12 seconds in order to be transfered from short-term to long-term memory.

“The brain is like Velcro for negative experiences but Teflon for positive ones.” – Rick Hanson

We were created to dream, create, imagine, and be overwhelmingly positive in the image of our maker. The enemy of our soul comes to steal, kill and destroy us, and one of his best tools is negativity. But 1 Corinthians says we have the mind of Christ, and His mind is not a negative mind.

With the facts of how our brains are naturally drawn to negatives, we know the importance of focusing our thoughts on truth. It’s time to REthink our approach to counteracting the negative.

Here are three tools to assist you in overcoming the negativity bias:

  1. Maintain an attitude of gratitude.
  2. Never underestimate the power of praise.
  3. Learn how to count like God.

Here are a few ideas to help you with negative thinking:

  • Stop to say “thank you” to someone at the top of every hour of the day.
  • Keep a journal of things for which you’re grateful.
  • When any negative thought or worry comes to mind, immediately thank God for the promise.
  • Insert small pleasant, positive experiences throughout your day, instead of only waiting for the weekend, vacations or special occassions.

“Praise small things frequently rather than big things infrequently.”(Dan Rockwell)

We tend to think giving thanks is this cute little obligatory thing that we should do. But giving thanks is a powerful tool that not only helps those around us, but transforms me to be more like the person I was created to be. Never underestimate the power of praise.

“As for me, I will always have hope; I will praise you more and more.” (Psalm 71:14)

God thinks we can, but what do we think about what God thinks? That is what becomes our reality. What are your thoughts adding up to? God’s truth, or your present reality?

It’s time to make up your mind. Will you agree with God’s truth, or continue to argue and count your excuses? Only you have the power to decide. Your decision is your destiny. The choice is yours. You can do all things through Christ who give you the strength.

“In one of the worst trials of his life, Paul “counted” his experience as a happy one (fortunate), because it was helping him be obedient to the heavenly vision.” (Acts 26:19)

What things could you count as happy if you saw them as obedience to God’s call?

11.13.2016 – Ps. Duane White – REthink Pt. 9

This Sunday, November 13th, 2016, Pastor Duane White continued to unpack our REthink series here at The Bridge Church in Denton, Texas.

“And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.”(Romans 12:2, NKJV)

There are things God has for you that you have no frame of reference for, and no eye has seen or ear has heard of them. Quit looking to someone, or something, for answers to questions for which only God can have a frame of reference.

However, as it is written:“What no eye has seen, what no ear has heard, and what no human mind has conceived”— the things God has prepared for those who love him—these are the things God has revealed to us by his Spirit. The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. For who knows a person’s thoughts except their own spirit within them? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. What we have received is not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may understand what God has freely given us. This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, explaining spiritual realities with Spirit-taught words. The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God but considers them foolishness, and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit. The person with the Spirit makes judgments about all things, but such a person is not subject to merely human judgments, for, “Who has known the mind of the Lord so as to instruct him?” But we have the mind of Christ.” (1 Corinthians 2:9-16)

The only way you can know the things of God is by the Spirit of God. These things that the scripture talks about, are the things that are prepared by God that no eye has seen and no ear has heard. We don’t speak about them in human wisdom or reasoning, but rather spiritual wisdom that comes from the Holy Spirit. Too many people are comparing spiritual wisdom to natural wisdom, but it doesn’t work.

This is the reason why you get so many contradicting voices speaking for God in the Christian world. They are attempting to take natural logic and using it to perceive spiritual truth.

Jesus made it clear in verse 16 that He only did and said what the Father did and said; so, to have the mind of Christ is to have the mind of the Father. The scripture also says that you have the mind of Christ.

You have the mind of Christ by the Spirit. You have access to it because you are in Christ, but the Spirit reveals it to you.

Everything significant thing in this world began with an idea. It’s important to understand that ideas come from one of three sources:

  1. God
  2. Devil
  3. You

Significant or life shaping ideas come from the spirit realm, whether it’s from God or the devil. Insignificant, or non-life shaping, ideas come from you.

Here are some characteristics of God ideas:

  • They begin in the mind of the Father.
  • They are revealed to us by the Spirit.
  • They must have agreement in the earth.
  • They are ultimately embodied in a living person.
  • They are transferred from one person, or generation, to another.

The ideas that are given to you are seeds, and the seed is either aborted or received.

“Therefore lay aside all filthiness and overflow of wickedness, and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.” (James 1:21, NKJV)

It’s only the word that is engraved and received with meekness and humility, and that saves your soul.

It’s not the thoughts, good or bad, that come and go in your life to shape you, but it’s the thoughts that come and stay that shape you. When a God idea comes and stays, it becomes alive in the person, or vessel, that God gave the idea to. Jesus was living proof of the will of the Father, and He taught those around Him to do the same. Over and over He said, “You have heard it said, but I say it to you.”

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it. “(John 1:1–5, NKJV)

There was a man, or woman, sent from God, whose name was _____. This man, or woman, came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all through him might believe.

Great ideas live much longer than person who receives the idea. With every new generation of the idea, it has the potential to get better. You can kill the person, but you can’t kill the idea. And the greatest idea of all was Jesus.

It’s time to REthink the God ideas over your life. It’s time to let the Holy Spirit reveal some ideas that the Father has prepared for you. It’s time to go on a Holy Ghost hunt, not an Easter egg hunt, but a destiny hunt.

One God-inspired idea could change your life forever, and not only yours, but many who will come after you.
