REthink: Thinking God’s Thoughts

“Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.” (Romans 12:2, NLT)

Praying brings a renewing of the mind and creates a better mindset. The definition of mindset is a “fixed mental attitude or disposition that predetermines a person’s responses to, and interpretations of, situations.” In other words, a mindset is an inclination or a habit.

Each person has an average of 60,000 thoughts a day! That’s one thought per second in every waking hour! Amazingly, 95 percent are the same thoughts repeated every day. On average, 80 percent of those habitual thoughts are negative.

“You are today where your thoughts have brought you; you will be tomorrow where your thoughts take you.” (James Allen)

Where is your mind?

How can we know God’s thoughts?

“For My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways,” says the Lord. “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts.” (Isaiah 55:8-9)

Here’s a few points highlighting God’s thoughts toward us found in scripture:

  1. God’s thoughts for you are good. (Jeremiah 29:11, Psalm 139:13-14)
  2. God’s thoughts are life. (Deuteronomy 30:19, John 10:10)
  3. God’s thoughts are creative. (Genesis 1:1, Genesis 1:27)
  4. God’s thoughts are peace.
  5. God thinks like a winner.

A thought is actually an electrical impulse. Every time you have a thought, your body releases chemicals that are sent throughout your entire body. Good thoughts release “feel good” chemicals, while bad thoughts release harmful chemicals that cause feelings of fear and stress.

These chemicals affect every cell in your body, as well as your emotions and attitude. Your attitude reflects the condition of your mind, and your emotions and attitude affect your physical health. For example, anxious, fearful thoughts result in feelings of fear, stress, and anxiety. These feelings have a huge impact on your health.

Toxic thoughts and feelings lead to physical illness and disease. Research shows that unhealthy thoughts leave behind harmful waste in our bodies that can cause sicknesses such as diabetes, cancer, heart disease, autoimmune disorders, ulcers, depression and more. Your thoughts can either make you healthy, more intelligent and creative, or they can damage your body, weaken your intellect and shut down your creativity.

Our thoughts are real and take up space in our brains. They can actually look like little trees with branches in brain scans. What is even more amazing is that these little trees (thoughts) can grow and shrink depending on what you choose to think about. For instance, if you dwell on a thought all day long and keep rehearsing it in your head, that thought-tree will grow more branches and get bigger, taking up more space in your brain. Think a single thought long enough and it actually becomes ingrained into your brain and becomes part of who you are.

This means you have the power to change your personality, responses, and habits by taking control of your thoughts.

We have no problem using our imaginations to worry. We have no problem imagining all the ways to fail or go wrong!
We need to redeem our creative imaginations to influence every mountain.

“If you can worry, you can create and think the thoughts of God.” (Pastor Kris White)

There are creative solutions on the inside of you. If you solve the King’s problems, you will have the King’s heart. Learn to REthink – take your thoughts captive, and use the creativity God put inside of you to change your world.
