This Sunday, July 3rd, 2016, Pastor Duane White began a new series at The Bridge Church in Denton, Texas on how to Armor Up with the armor of God.

Armor Up: Belt of Truth

“Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.” (Ephesians 6:10–11, NKJV)

This sentence begins in the “present passive imperative” tense, meaning that present is now and always will be now. What Paul is really saying here (when broken down into the original Greek) is that from now on, be constantly growing superhuman in your strength in the Lord and in the outward manifestation of the divine muscle that is inherent in Him!

So how do you do it?

“Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.”(Ephesians 6:11)

Put On means “enduo” which also means to dress oneself, to hide in, to clothe with. Clothe yourself in it, hide in it, and wrap yourself in it. When you put on the armor of God, it makes you superhuman. In other words, the armor of God is like your super hero costume. Without it, you are just another normal person, but with it, you are a super hero.

“For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.”(Ephesians 6:12, NKJV)

Here Paul is explaining why we need this spiritual armor. We are not in bloody hand to hand combat with humans or anything natural, but we are going face to face with a spiritual enemy.

Paul puts that enemy into four categories:

  1. “principalities” = “arche” – first things; ancient rulers
  2. “powers” = “exousia” – authority; usually delegated
  3. “rulers of the darkness of this age” = “kosmokratos” – world-ruler of darkness (in a given time period)
  4. “spiritual wickedness in heavenly places” = spiritual evil in realms above (or outside) the earth

Remember, the primary battlefield of the enemy is in your mind.

“Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.” (Ephesians 6:13, NKJV)

Before Paul mentions what each piece of armor is, he is telling them why they need to “Armor Up!” There is a battle, but you have access to the superhuman strength of the living God before you can join the fight.

Pastor Duane then discussed the first piece of armor mentioned in Ephesians 6, the belt of Truth. So what is our belt? Truth is an actual person, and his name is JESUS! He is the centerpiece of the entire armor! Truth was personified in Jesus, but it can be discovered in the Word.

Truth covers and protects our most vulnerable places, and our ability to reproduce spiritually. You can’t cover your own weakness. If you don’t know what the Word says about your vulnerable places, you are uncovered and open to attack.

The Word not only protects your vulnerabilities, but it protects your ability to to reproduce. The Word of God is a seed, but in this sense, it protects your seed.

Truth is the piece on which all of our armor rests. Truth is a foundational garment.
